Veteran Racer Cecil Gordon Dies

LEXINGTON, N.C. – Cecil Gordon, a veteran of 449 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts, died Wednesday after a short battle with cancer. He was 71.

Gordon spent 40 years in NASCAR, first as an independent driver and team owner. In 449 starts, he earned 29 top fives and 111 top 10s with a best finish of second at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway in 1975.

After retiring as a driver and team owner, he joined Richard Childress Racing as a crew member for Dale Earnhardt and later joined a team owned by Travis Carter.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
