DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Saturday was a good day to be a member of the Elliott family.

Chase Elliott, making his first laps in a NASCAR Nationwide Series car at Daytona Int’l Speedway, led the first day of Nationwide Preseason Thunder testing in his JR Motorsports Chevrolet. His lap of 187.993 mph came during afternoon drafting practice.

And who was Elliott drafting with? None other than his father, 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, who was testing the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in place of team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. The elder Elliott is not expected to race at Daytona in February.

Following the Elliott family in third was fellow JR Motorsports driver Regan Smith. Ty Dillon and Trevor Bayne completed the overall top five for the day.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion Dylan Kwasniewski led the morning session driving a Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet. James Buescher was second for RAB Racing, followed by Kyle Larson, Elliott Sadler and Dillon.

In other news from Daytona on Saturday, NASCAR has outlawed tandem drafting in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Officials warned teams that if anyone attempts to hook up for a tandem draft during the season openers in February, both cars in the tandem draft would be black flagged.
