Former NASCAR Team Owner Whitaker Dies

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Ed Whitaker, a former NASCAR team owner, died Friday morning in Bristol, Tenn.

Whitaker fielded teams for several years in what is now the NASCAR Nationwide Series, winning 28 races with drivers Morgan Shepherd (eight) and Harry Gant (20). He also fielded cars for several of NASCAR’s premier drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Davey Allison, Alan Kulwicki, Dale Earnhardt, Tim Richmond and Mark Martin.

All told Whitaker-owned teams made 246 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts, with 28 victories, 80 top fives and 107 top 10s. He also fielded a car for John Utsman in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for six events from 1978 to 1980, earning a best finish of 16th in 1978.
