FENWICK: Spinning Wheels

CONCORD, N.C. — As the calendar turns to June, it is officially racing season throughout the United States. Short tracks all over the country have kicked off the dust and rust from several months off and the sounds of roaring engines and screaming fans are familiar at speedways from coast to coast.

June usually features a bevy of racing options for short-track racing fans all over the country. From asphalt late models to dirt modifieds and everything in between, it isn’t hard to find a race to attend this month.

That said, here are a few races we recommend to those who have the budget and the time to do some traveling.

- The ARCA Midwest Tour’s Howie Lettow Memorial 150 returns to The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., on June 6-8 and is expected to once again draw a who’s-who of top asphalt late model stars from across the country.

In only its third year at the one-mile Wisconsin State Fairgrounds oval, the race has quickly grown into one of the premier asphalt late models races in the United States. It certainly helped when Kyle Busch, who only makes a handful of late model starts every year, decided to attend the Lettow Memorial last year. It was a surprise to no one when Busch took home the winner’s trophy.

This year, the race will be held on a weekend for the first time, likely preventing Busch and other NASCAR interlopers from attending.

- The annual running of the Dirt Late Model Dream is scheduled for June 6-7 at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway. The annual race is considered one of the crown jewels of dirt late model racing. Scott Bloomquist is the defending winner and will be looking for his seventh victory in the $100,000-to-win classic
