LOS ANGELES — The quarter-mile clay Orange Show Stadium in San Bernardino ended its season in October.

Dirt Entertainment LLC cancelled URA races on Oct. 18, Nov. 8, 28 and 30. The organization lost two major financial backers with the death of Don Flanders and the loss of funding from Macro Air.

Former sprint car driver Scott Burns and his group ran six sprint car events plus modified and stock car dates at OSS and its other leased track, the three-eighths-mile Route 66 Motorplex in Victorville.

A reborn URA ran six sprint car races with four winners and car counts of 18, 22, 16, 24, 20 and 16. Feature winners were David Cardey (two wins), Matt Mitchell (two wins) Mike Spencer and Brody Roa.

A recent rumor has OSS returning to paved track racing if a promoter for 2014 can be found by the Orange Show Fair manager. He wants racing to continue at OSS after concerts in 2012 were not successful financially.

The Lakeport “October Classic” BCRA Midget Series 30-lap feature at the paved Lakeport Speedway quarter-mile took place Oct. 12. USAC Midget and Silver Crown veteran Tanner Swanson, 22, drove the No. 4 Beast/Fontana owned by Bob Rosen to victory. Mike Snider and Gary Conterno followed.

During October auto racing had to fight for its right to race at the quarter-mile clay Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. Some residents objected to a new contract, but the fair board recognized noise abatement efforts by promoter John Prentice and extended his contract for another three years.
Many racers and supporters were in the audience and helped racing prevail at the popular fairgrounds track near Santa Cruz.

Kern County Raceway Park’s inaugural NASCAR K & N West 150-lap race Oct. 26 went to 2011 K&N West champion Greg Pursley and his No. 26 Ford of Gene Price Racing. It was his 18th victory in the series. Preliminary features went to Eric Richardson in a NASCAR late model 50-lap race with 17 cars and Chris Dalton in a spec modified 35-lap race.

The track reported 4,200 in attendance, up from a reported 3,500 for the Sept. 7 SPEARS SRL late model race.

The late October Las Vegas Motor Speedway Fall Classic at the three-eighths-mile “Bullring” had numerous classes in action. Winners were Jay Beasley, seventh starter in a 24-car super late model 150-lap main; Toni McCray in a 100-lap late model main. She started third in a 16-car field and led the final 99 laps. Ricky Schlick, 16, won the 23-car INEX Legend Cars race. Jake Swanson won the USAC Ignite midgets 30-lap main.

Shane Golobic, a versatile sprint car and midget driver from Fremont, has expanded his racing recently to NASCAR K&N West stock cars. This year he finished seventh in the Tulsa Chili Bowl A-main and won his first World of Outlaws 30-lap feature at Antioch Speedway April 5 in the Joe Von Schriltz No. 121.

The 22-year son of retired sprint car driver John Golobic is an engineering student at San Jose State University. He raced the No. 20 Toyota Tundra twice during October for past K&N West champion car owner Bill McAnally.

On Oct. Golobic raced in the 150-lap race at All-American Speedway and finished eighth. On Oct. 26, he finished eighth again at Kern County Raceway Park.

After the Oct. 12 AMA Flat Track National in Pomona won by Brad Baker, some riders went to the high-desert for two afternoons of fun racing Oct. 19-20. Heat races and a 20-lap main event for about $7,000 in donated cash was the lure.

The site was Walt James Stadium, a three-eighths mile dirt track at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosemond.

Jared Mees (Rotax), Sammy Halbert (Harley) and Brian Bauman (Honda) finished in P. 1-2-3. Baker rode a Rotax to sixth; Shayna Texter rode her Honda to seventh in a 15-rider field. On Saturday, Halbert won the “dash for cash” and Mees won the Digger Open Pro main over Baker.

Later in the week, 2012 AMA National Champion Mees had successful surgery performed Oct. 24 at National Surgery Center in Los Gatos. His “messed up” arm stemmed from an injury during early summer at a non-AMA National Ashland race. Recuperation time is expected to be six weeks. He should be ready to race with AMA at the Daytona Beach short track in March 2014.

After two years the No. 42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Kawasaki team is disbanding. Rider Bryan Smith finished second to Baker at Pomona and in 2013 AMA Flat Track national points.

So Smith is seeking a replacement ride to race for the 2014 championship. Kenny Coolbeth and other frontrunners are reported to be out of their 2013 rides. The 2014 AMA Flat Track rider/team lineup is more unsettled than usual, so silly season of rider movement is more active than usual.
