KERCHNER: Friday Morning Heat Race

7b. Having given Bobby Gerhart his due two laps ago, we now ask that if he and his brother Billy can build a fast car for ARCA competition at Daytona, why don’t they try to build a fast machine for the Nationwide or Cup Series races as well? We’re betting the team’s sponsor, Lucas Oil, would support that effort.

8. We give Brian Keselowski credit for taking his own equipment to Daytona in an attempt to qualify for the Great American Race, but wonder why he didn’t hire a driver the likes of Mike Wallace or Sterling Marlin to try to race his privateer effort into the event. Keselowski has a great family lineage, but lacks the Daytona experience of Wallace, who almost annually drives a slow car into the Daytona 500 field.

9. The winged sprint car circuit won’t be the same if Jac Haudenschild doesn’t find a ride soon.

10. When a Speed/Fox announcer says a driver lacks experience, what it really means is that the driver in question hasn’t had a NASCAR logo tattooed on his or her behind since taking his or her first laps in a racing car.

11. Wondering which performance prior to Sunday’s Daytona 500 will draw the most raves from the live audience at Daytona Int’l Speedway and the television viewership on Fox? Martina McBride’s performance of the national anthem or Darrell Waltrip’s delivery of the NASCAR battle cry — Boogity, Boogity, Boogity?

12. Who will win the Daytona 500? Dale Earnhardt, Jr. I know he will be in a backup car and I know that’s the story NASCAR and Fox want and need to start the season, but I just have a feeling about this one.

13. Rule Change. Your $500,000 car no longer fits the templates. Please proceed to the NSSNOnline homepage to read the rest of the racing news.
