Edwards, Waltz Split Twin 75s

usamap_midatlanticHAMPTON, Va. — Greg Edwards and Matt Waltz picked up their second wins of the season, splitting the Twin 75s for the ComServe/Verizon Wireless Late Model Stock Cars, the featured events of Saturday evening’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley (Va.) Speedway.

Waltz started the opener from the pole, at 90.068 mph, and led lap 1 by half a car-length over Nick Smith.

On lap 2, Waltz and Smith tangled in Turns 3 and 4 and Waltz spun, bringing out the only caution flag.

Brandon Gdovic assumed the lead for the ensuing restart, but gave way to Edwards, who launched from the outside lane.

By the finish, Edwards had stretched his winning margin to a full straightaway.

Mark Wertz was the runner-up, followed by Gdovic and Waltz, who rebounded for a fourth-place finish. Brenden “Butterbean” Queen was fifth.

By virtue of his win in the first event, Edwards was the pole starter for the nightcap.

Edwards showed the way for the first 12 laps, while Waltz worked his way toward the front.

On lap 13, Waltz ducked underneath Edwards at the end of the backstretch, drew even in the middle of Turns 3 and 4 and pulled ahead as they returned to the flagstand.

The only caution flag waved on lap 60 and wiped out Waltz’s lead, which had grown to half a straightaway.

On the restart, Waltz sped away from the pack, while Edwards and Gdovic battled for second.

At the end, Waltz was the winner by half a straightaway over Gdovic. Edwards was third, followed by Smith and Wertz.
