Elton Hildreth, 93

Elton Hildreth, a top New Jersey modified driver, died Monday. He was 93 years old. With the nickname “Wildman,” Hildreth blazed across the eastern seaboard with his pumpkin colored No. 16j coupes.

A longtime resident of Bridgeton, N.J., Hildreth was a notorious practical joker. One night, a powder puff race was held at Old Bridge (N.J.) Speedway. Hildreth wore a dress, competed in the race and grabbed the trophy away from the winner.

In the early 1950s, he competed in NASCAR’s Grand National division. He ranked 13th in points in 1953 with one top five and five top-10finishes. He was a Nash dealer and competed in them.
