Franklin County Plans Moonshine Classic

CALLAWAY, Va. – Franklin County Speedway has a rich history of racing and in its 45th consecutive year of racing action it will honor that tradition with one of the biggest Vintage events anywhere.

Last season the track played host to a handful of Vintage races including the Southern Ground Pounders and the East Coast Flathead Fords. This season the track will play host to an event that will bring the old coupes, coaches and sportsman cars that made the track popular back in the early days back to the track in a big way.

“I’m excited,” said Franklin County Speedway Promoter Langley Austin. “We’re about the most old school race track you can find anywhere in my opinion. So when we were looking for ideas to make the ‘Moonshine Classic’ event unique, we started thinking old school.

“We’re working closely with Mack Tatum of the Southern Ground Pounders Racing Club to make this event as big as possible. Mack and his group put together a Nationals event last October in North Carolina with huge success and we started talking about doing a Spring one. It all just came together.”

“I had been thinking we should do a spring Nationals race in addition to the fall one we started last year,” Mack Tatum said. “Langley (Austin) is doing a great job of reviving Franklin County Speedway and there’s no better place for us to have this type of event at with all the history there.”

The Moonshine Classic will be part of a throwback night where drivers of Franklin County’s past will come out and join today’s drivers and fans.

“We’re also going to make this ‘Racers Reunion’ for all the legends of Franklin County Speedway to come out and sign autographs and enjoy this night with the cars that they made famous so long ago,” Austin said. “I might not have been around to see this type of racing back then but I’m an old school racing fan. I love the cars and the personalities that made racing great back in those days. I think this event will honor those times and those racers perfectly and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it.”
