Humblet Gets No. 8 At Langley

HAMPTON, Va. — Jimmy Humblet started on the pole, at 88.565 mph, and wired the field for his eighth win of the season in the Larry King Law 50 for the KeesVacations.com Modifieds, the featured event of Saturday evening’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley Speedway.

After leading by nearly half a straightaway at the halfway mark, Humblet struggled a bit over the second half of the race as slower traffic became a factor.

At the finish, though, Humblet held off Chris Johnson by a car-length to secure the victory. Matt Slye was third to the line, while Anthony Kincaid and Danny Harrell rounded out the top five.

Point leader Robbie Babb was collected in a crash during the afternoon practice session and made only a token appearance on the starting grid before retiring to his pit stall. Babb enjoyed an insurmountable cushion in the standings coming into the points finale, however, and claimed the 2013 championship over Humblet.

Randy Akers grabbed the top spot on lap 3, then held on at the end for his third win in the 40-lap Butterfoss & Barton Orthodontics Super Street feature. Bill Eaker pulled to the outside of Akers at the white flag in a bid for the win, but came up a car-length short at the checkers. Sammy Gaita was third, followed by John Pereira, who took over the division points lead. Marty Tice was fifth.

Landon Florian moved out front on lap 26 and rolled to his fifth victory in a 30-lapper for the Standard Welding Pro Sixes.

Bobby Hall, who led laps 1-25, was the runner-up, four lengths back, while Jordan Wood, Steve Williams and Cody Carlton completed the top five.

Tommy Jackson Jr. took the lead on lap 10 and showed the way to his third win in the 20-lap Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Kart race. Jackson’s drafting partners, Matt Dail and Ryan Hudgins, were second and third, respectively, followed by Chris O’Brien and Charlie-Ray Lorah.

Derrick Boggess scored his first win in the evening’s final race, a 30-lapper for the Bojangles’ Enduros. He took the lead on a restart on lap two. Richard Quinn moved into second on lap seven and tailed Boggess to the checkers, finishing more than half a straightaway back. Dave Wedding, Alex Floroff and Larry Drommerhausen were third, fourth and fifth, in that order.
