Berwanger Outruns Kinkade At Skyline

STEWART, Ohio – Oh, how quickly the tides can change.

This theme shared a common thread throughout the potent night of racing at Billy Jarrell’s Skyline Speedway Friday night in front of a packed house for the combined Jack Shutts/Greg Schilling Memorial racing events.

Jeremy Berwanger staged a late race pass to claim the Octane AMRA Modified Greg Schilling Memorial over early leader Anthony Kinkade, while in the Jack Shutts Kryptonite AMRA Late Model main Tim Dohm brought home the $3,000 win in an embattled run with Tyler Carpenter, Josh McGuire and Chris Garnes.

Nearly 100 cars flooded the pit area and the stands were packed to watch good racing and to honor two of racing’s fallen heroes. The stage was perfect as the three-eighths-mile red clay oval was groomed to near perfection and continuously racey throughout the evening. The multi-groove action and star-studded field made Friday one of the year’s greatest events with the Sara Bond “Big Three” and Harvest 50 yet to come in 2013.

At the start of the AMRA Octane main event Kinkade’s 144 jumped into the early lead, however, Kinkade’s rear quarters were heat-tempered from the fire-breathing dragons grinding on his rear bumper. Berwanger was there every inch of the way waiting for the right moment, while Kenny Johnson battled Kevin Moorehouse and Jessie Wisecarver for third.

Early in the race Mike McPherson and Johnson made contact, sending both nearly out of control, but quick thinking by both veterans righted their cars without incident.

A racey track provided fast low, middle, and high groove racing. The first caution did not fly until eight laps of the thirty-lapper were in the books. Tanner Wilson made contact with Jesse Hartman and collected Nick Corbitt as well. Wilson was whistled for the caution. As the race restarted all eyes were on the Kinkade/Berwanger battle. Berwanger and Kinkade engaged in a friendly round of multi-lap bumper tag. Berwanger pulled alongside Kinkade numerous times but couldn’t quite ride out the momentum.
