Leer Snags Early Birthday Present
JIM FALLS, Wis. – Matt Leer received an early birthday present on Sunday as the soon to be 22-year-old swept the field in the WISSOTA/Amsoil Modified division on Sunday at Eagle Valley Raceway.
Steve Hallquist and Dave Baxter lead the way at the start of the modified feature. Hallquist was the early leader, leading lap one with Baxter and Leer applying the early pressure.
By the time the cars had made the second circuit, Leer had made his move, from third, for the top spot sending Hallquist to second.
With five laps done, it was Leer in control by about six car lengths. Leer was followed by Kevin Adams, who had started fifth, Hallquist, Jesse Glenz, coming off of a DNF in his heat after wrecking a drive shaft while leading with one lap to go in the heat, and Baxter.
By the time lap 10 was completed, Leer was in full command with an eight car lead as Adams was doing his best by going high and low on the track in an attempt to catch Leer. Glenz ran third, at this point, followed by Hallquist and Baxter.
With five laps remaining, Leer was in firm control, Glenz had moved up to second, Adams ran third followed by Baxter and Hallquist.
Leer, who will be celebrating his birthday on Tuesday, got the win in his NAPA Auto Parts sponsored car. Glenz, Baxter, Jake Hartung, and Mark Gerth, who had put on a late race surge to move up from seventh with four to go.
Other WISSOTA/Amsoil winners were Shane Kisling sweeping in his Super Stock, Grant Southworth doing the same in his Midwest Modified, and Troy Fransway picking up his second win of the year in his Street Stock. In the Eagle Valley divisions, it was George Richards with a sweep, picking up his fifth feature win and Eric Schultz getting win number two for the weekend in his Hornet.
