New Owners For Former Kamp Speedway
The former Kamp Speedway, located in Benton County, Ind., was purchased Friday by Michael and Kim Daugherty of Lafayette, Ind.
Michael Daugherty, a former UMP stock car driver and president of Abstract Technology Group, a computer services business in Lafayette, plans to open the shuttered track in April of 2014. Its last year of operation was in 2009.
The three-eighths-mile dirt track will undergo major cleanup over the winter with the addition of 4,000 tons of new clay in December. A major sponsor will be sought for naming rights to the track for up to five years. If no sponsor is found, the track will be called Daugherty Speedway.
Race night has yet to be determined, but classes of cars will be UMP modifieds, UMP stock cars, pure streets and sport compacts.
Opened in 1967 as Henry’s Speedway, the venue has seen many types of cars in action over the years. Prior to its final year, it had been host to the UMP Summernationals and the USAC Indiana Sprint and Midget weeks.
