Plank Nabs First Red Cedar Triumph
MENOMONIE, Wis. – Luke Plank won his first ever Super Stock feature race Friday night at Red Cedar Speedway to top a list of eight first time winners at the track.
A night when five makeup feature races were held along with the regular seven class program, other first time winners this season at Red Cedar included Ron Hanestad, Jesse Redetzke, Mike Anderson, Scott Gilberts, Nick Koehler, Cory Williams and Adam Hensel. Other winners on the evening included Sam Fankhauser, George Richards and Eric Schultz who scored the only double wins on the night.
Schultz won both the Hornet feature races. He led flag to flag in the makeup feature after starting in the front row of that race. The regularly scheduled feature proved to be much tougher to win after he had to battle his way up from the fourth row. The leaders ran four wide into the first turn before Schultz used the bottom side of the track to move into the lead and pull away in the late going in the nonstop race.
Richards won the Pure Stock feature, his second win of the season at Red Cedar. The feature race was a hard fought with Jake Hanson leading until he spun out, at which time Dustin Doughty took over the top spot. Doughty survived being spun out himself while leading and was restored to the point. The last few laps of the race saw a great three car battle between Doughty, Richards and Jeremy Dahl. Richards edged ahead on the final lap and when Doughty went for broke to try and regain the top spot, he spun and lost a couple of positions as Dahl moved back into second.
Hanestad started on the pole for the Makeup Street Stock feature and he ran away for the win, with only Cody Kummer able to keep Hanestad within range. Hanestad also quickly raced past Ashley Wahlstrom to take the lead in the regularly scheduled feature but then Fankhauser came from the fourth row in a stirring drive to take the lead and the win. Fankhauser was able to use the upper side of the track to drive past Hanestad and become the first four time winner at the track in 2013.
