Chaffee Flies At Bradford
BRADFORD, Vt. — “The Fairlee Flier,” Kevin Chaffee ended his USAC Dirt Midget Ass’n championship season on a note so high it could constitute his audition for La Scala.
After a rain delay on a cold damp night at Bear Ridge Speedway, Chaffee provided one of the hottest battles of the year, emerging victorious after a four way fight for the lead with Joe Krawiec, Josh Sunn and Jeff Champagne. Close quarters racing by the quick quartet had the fans cheering.
Starting fifth and surviving a melee at the start that eliminated three cars, Chaffee worked the outside like a fighter pilot and the inside like a submariner as he fought his way to the front.
Each driver had an individual incentive: Chaffee aspired to end the season with panache, Krawiec wanted to assuage his first loss of a championship in three years, Sunn sought a midget victory to match his three modified wins this season and high school hot shoe Champagne hoped to prove that his career first midget win a few weeks ago was far from a fluke.
Collectively, they put on a show that will give the fans something to talk about until races resume next Spring.
