Coons Stays Hot In New York
BETHEL, N.Y. – Rich Coons continued his hot streak in the sportsman division at Bethel Motor Speedway, collecting his third victory of the season Saturday evening.
Dion Naples started on the pole alongside Philip Goetschius. By lap two, however, a determined Jerry Curry had come from fourth to snatch the lead from Naples.
Coons started further back in the field, but made his way to second by lap five and immediately went to work on taking the lead from Curry.
Coons got the advantage on a restart and put his car out front, as the previous event winner, Bill Deckelman, came to third. The top three battled it out over the remaining laps, but Coons was unstoppable as he drove on to the win.
Other winners Saturday included Alessandro Vitelli (Legends Pro/Masters), Matt Evans (Legends Young Lions/Semi-Pro), Christian Eckes (bandolero), Joseph Graf Jr. (bandolero), Jim Helt (pro-stock), Wilton Nickerson (modified), Wilton Nickerson (four-cylinder advanced) and Joe Smith (four-cylinder novice).
