Hearn Rolls To No. 9 At Albany-Saratoga

MALTA, N.Y. — Brett Hearn, who has had the 2014 Albany-Saratoga Speedway modified championship on ice since last week, closed out the season with win No. 9 Friday night after a crowd pleasing battle with Matt DeLorenzo and three-time winner Kenny Tremont Jr.

Tremont got to the stripe second in an event marred by nine yellows, with Marc Johnson, Peter Britten, Fonda Speedway promoter DeLorenzo, Neil Stratton, Rich Ronca, Mark Kislowski and Donnie Ronca trailing.

Jimmy Cottrell and Rich Ronca dueled early on, with Ronca finally taking command on lap six only to have Britten, up from 12th, sail by two laps later. The Australian’s lead was short lived, as he suffered a flat right rear on lap 13, passing the led to DeLorenzo.

But Tremont and Hearn, up from 13th and 15th, respectively, had taken advantage of the constant cautions and were in the top six and headed towards the front. Tremont sneaked by Hearn on lap 16 and when the 35-lapper hit halfway, he was closing on the leader, who promptly slid to the top of turn one and gave up his advantage. The duo then battled side by side on the top of the speedway, with Hearn trying to get his nose under Tremont whenever he faltered, through lap 29, when they went by the flagstand three wide. When DeLorenzo went over the end of turn one, Hearn got far enough past Tremont to negate his advantage off the banking and got the lead off turn two. Though he would almost get over the end himself before the end, he managed to get to the checkers first.

Byron Wescott edged Walt Brownell to earn his first pro stock win of the season and jump to second in the points race behind champion Rob Yetman, who was fifth, while Jon Miller edged Hunter Bates in the sportsman finale.
