Johnson Rides Low Groove To Glory

MALTA, N.Y. — Marc Johnson snared the 35-lap modified feature at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway Friday night with a low-groove run from seventh that saw him sneak under rim-riding front row starter Mike Perrotte for the lead on lap 15, then hold off 12th starting Matt DeLorenzo and Brett Hearn, up from 14th, to the checkered flag.

Perrotte settled for fourth ahead of Jeremy Wilder, Australian Peter Britten, Keith Flach, Stewart Friesen, last week’s winner Kenny Tremont Jr and Matt DePew.

The race was marred by a lap seven red flag when Ronnie Johnson, dueling for fourth with Rich Ronca, jumped a wheel and did a series of five barrel rolls down the backstretch. He was shaken but uninjured.

Mike Tholin won the evening’s high-dollar sportsman special, grabbing the $1,100 win from race-long leader Frankie Hoard III on the last lap after a charge from deep in the field. Scott Duel and Erik Mack trailed.
