VERNON, N.Y. – Jimmy Phelps has been close to winning several of dirt modified racing’s crown jewel events.

On Monday night at the Utica-Rome Speedway Phelps finally accomplished that feat as he won the VP Racing Fuels/Paul Kinney Motorsports Race of Champions Victoria 200 100-lap Modified main-event

The win paid him a hefty $10,000 for his efforts.

Phelps’ day started on a sour note as he pulled nearly the highest number out of pill draw. He started at the tail of his heat race and then proceeded to work his way up through to finish in the second position earning spot in the redraw. That didn’t work either as he redrew 13 out of 14.

With Phelps starting 14th, Jimmy Davis took the lead at the green after starting on the pole. Davis held off the early challenges of Matt Sheppard and Tim Fuller. Fuller eventually moved into the runner-up position on the 16th circuit and then he worked past Davis on the inside of turns three and four on lap 17.

On lap 20 Stewart Friesen caught an implement tire on the inside of turns one and two forcing him off the speedway surface. At this point Fuller was your leader with Davis, Sheppard, Phelps and Todd Burley the top five.

Action got back underway with Fuller holding onto the lead as Davis attempted to work his way by for the top spot. Fuller though was too good, however, and he held onto the lead. Fuller led in traffic as Phelps took second from Davis on lap 29. They remained the top two as they raced to traffic on lap 31.

Fuller and Phelps waged a torrid battle in slower traffic for several laps. Fuller raced in the middle and Phelps stuck to the bottom trying to get the bite to take the top spot away from Fuller.

Finally, on lap 58, Phelps worked to the inside of turns three and four and he was able to wrestle the lead away from Fuller. Before another lap could be completed, Brad Alger spun in the first turn bringing out the final caution of the feature.
