Zemken Zooms To Fonda Score
FONDA, N.Y. — Local favorite Jessica Zemken scored a popular win in the Earl Halaquist Memorial for the Empire Super Sprints Saturday night at the Fonda Speedway, staging a race-long battle with Cory Sparks before finally securing the $2,000 payday.
Tenth-starting veteran Lance Yonge caught fire in the late stages of the 25-lap A-main and ran down Sparks on the last lap to lead Sparks, mid-race spin victim Bobby Varin, Justin Barger, Chuck Hebing, Sammy Reakes, Jeff Cook, Dan Kaszubinski and Warren Alexson to the checkers.
“We didn’t have the best car tonight but the top went away and when we switched lanes, we got better,” said the high flying Zemken, who started third and caught Sparks on lap 14 but had to give it back when yellow waved before they completed the lap. The lead then went back and forth for four laps before the familiar No. 1z finally prevailed.
Last week’s modified winner, Danny Varin, charged through the field from 14th with Stewart Friesen in pursuit all the way.
Varin snatched the lead from Josh Hohenforst on lap 23, with the 15th starting Friesen getting right to his back bumper before tagging the turn two wall on the black slick half-mile with two to go. He recovered for second ahead of Matt DeLorenzo, Hohenforst, Ronnie Johnson, Jimmy Davis and the winner’s father, Bobby.
