DODGE CITY, Kan. – Brendon Gemmill’s first race at Dodge City Raceway Park of the season got off to a rough start when he bent his frame on the opening lap of a heat race crash.

The two-time and reigning track champion rebounded in top form though, jumping into his father’s No. 721 car and rallying through the “B” Main before racing from the 16th starting position to win Saturday night’s 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event atop the three-eighths-mile clay oval.

While Gemmill revisited victory lane after snaring five DCRP triumphs in 2012, other Saturday night winners included Jeff Kaup in United Wireless IMCA Sport Modified action, Cody Zimmerman in IMCA Stock Cars, Toby Schield in Thunder Cars and Jarett Lunow in Hornets.

While Ponca City, Oklahoma’s Gemmill started eight rows deep in the IMCA Modified feature event, third-starter Beau Davis gunned into the lead on the opening round and paced the initial circuits before pole starter Ryan Heger surged into the lead after losing several positions on the opening round.

With Davis leading the early circuits before Heger took command, Gemmill was working through the field in rapid fashion, cracking the top five by the eighth lap. Following a caution, Gemmill shot to third on the ninth round and then took second away from Davis at the midway point.

Gemmill went to work on Heger for the point, ultimately getting a run off the low side of turn two to race into the lead on the 16th round. Gemmill raced on to the checkered flag unabated in front of Heger, with Jon Herring, Jr., Davis and Randy Wilson rounding out the top five.
