Flying Debris Kills Des Moines Track Worker

DES MOINES, Iowa — A volunteer track worker was killed Friday night at Iowa State Fair Speedway.

Richard Welch died after he was hit by debris during a crash in a hobby stock race at the half-mile oval. Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Ben Lampe told the Des Moines Register that a car lost control and hit a concrete barrier, sending debris into the infield where Welch was standing. At this time it is unknown if Welch was struck by debris or by the car itself.

It was the first death at the track since 2004.
