Murray Masters Dodge City
DODGE CITY, Kan. — David Murray pocketed the $1,000 winner’s share in the BST South Championship event Saturday night at Dodge City Raceway Park by working his way forward from six rows deep to take command in the final circuits.
While the past IMCA Modified National Champion snared his second win of the year at DCRP, other winners on the night included Trent Kleweno in United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds, Billy Phelps in IMCA Stock Cars, Randle McRoberts in the Poor Boy Kustomz Thunder Cars and Dillan Brown in Hornets.
While Murray, who topped the April 21 season opener at DCRP, gridded the 25-lap BST / IMCA Modified feature twelfth, it was pole starter Mike Lunow pacing the initial four circuits before Brandon Blochlinger battled into the lead.
Blochlinger led the way for a half dozen rounds before Troy Gemmill raced into the lead on the tenth round in his bid for a third win of the season at DCRP. As Murray made his way up to third by the midway point, a fierce three-way battle for the point developed between Gemmill, Joe Cleveland and Murray, with Cleveland surging into the lead on the 19th lap only to have the move negated by a caution.
Cleveland lost power one lap later, with Murray then powering around the top side to take the lead away from Gemmill on the 22nd lap. Murray raced on to the stripe and the $1,000 payday, with Blochlinger taking second away from Gemmill on the 22nd lap. Gemmill settled for the show position, with Lunow and newly-crowned BST Modified South champion Cody Gearhart rounding out the top five.
Trent Kleweno raced into the lead on the fourth lap of the 20-lap United Wireless IMCA Sport Modified feature and then survived an encounter with lapped traffic in the closing circuits to secure his second DCRP win of the year in the non-stop affair.
After starting fifth, Kleweno took the lead away from points leader Bart Baker on the fourth round. Kleweno ultimately slipped away from Baker and Mike Wadel until a lapped car slowed his progress with less than five laps to go. Baker edged back into the lead on the 18th lap, but Kleweno returned the favor in turns one and two on the white flag lap to post the win in front of Baker, Wadel, Austin Walker and Brian May.
Similarly, Billy Phelps advanced from the fifth starting position to take the lead away from Kyle Clough four laps into the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature and then survived a late caution for his first win of the year at DCRP.
Phelps held a half-dozen car-length advantage over points leader Perry Misner, who worked his way past Clough and Casey Werkmeister by the 15th round, until a caution flew with just two laps go to.
Phelps held off Misner for the win though, with Clough, Josh Crombie and Werkmeister rounding out the top five.
Randle McRoberts held command through the initial nine laps of the 15-lap Poor Boy Kustomz Thunder Car feature before Jeremy Wagner moved in to dice for the point. The pair battled side-by-side over the final six rounds, with McRoberts getting the edge at the stripe with Wagner, Toby Schield, Dan Rogers and Bryan Habiger rounding out the top five.
Dillan Brown needed less than two laps to race from tenth to first en route to his first Hornet feature win, taking the checkered flag in the 12-lapper ahead of Jaret Lunow, Dwayne Bowman, Dakota Brown and Jarred Nightengale.
