Summer Shootout Begins At CMS
CONCORD, N.C. – It was a wild and crazy start to the 20th annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series, as Tyler Green, Rodney Tharp and John Holleman picked up wins. In addition, Darin Roberts of Carl A. Furr Elementary took home the trophy in the first of two nights of principal school bus races on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval of Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Roberts claimed the victory for the second year in a row in a spectacular school bus slobberknocker where he went from almost flipping in the middle of the pack to leading the race within two laps. Roberts beat out second-place Tripp Aldredge of Harris Road Middle School, Tim Farrar of Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, Chuck Borders of Pitts School Road Elementary, Adam Auerbach of Wolf Meadow Elementary, Jim Carroll of Hickory Ridge Middle School and Greg Liddle of Mount Pleasant High School.
The principals will return tomorrow night for a rematch, where they will line up according to tonight’s finish.
Legends All-Star winner and China Grove, N.C.-native, Green, captured the Legend Car Pro division win during the first round of the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series. After a three-car inversion, Green started in third, but blasted to the lead on lap 4 while Daniel Hemric battled Ryan Shattuck for second place.
On lap 13, the yellow flag flew for contact between Evan Swilling and T.J. Michael, and caution flew again on lap 15 for Gregory Lang, who nosed his car into the wall in Turn 4. On the restart, Green led the way and Hemric chose the outside lane to start on the front row. Green would hold the point position unchallenged the rest of the way. Hemric finished second, Kaz Grala finished third, Shattuck claimed fourth and Steven Cantrell battled through the field to finish fifth.
In the Security Force Legend Car Masters division feature, Tharp claimed his first win at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series.
