Heath Tops Skagit Sprinters

ALGER, Wash. — It was the hottest day of the year at Skagit Speedway and the racing action on the track was even hotter.

Colton Heath won the 360 sprint car main, the sportsman sprint main winner was Zach McCabe, Chase Goetz won the USAC midget main and Jon Gunderson won the outlaw tuner main.

Heath started the night with fast time in 360 sprint time trials at 12.012 seconds. Heat race winners were Derek Roberts and Kelsey Carpenter. In the feature, Kenny Rutz used his front row starting spot to tear into the lead, which he held for the first 13 circuits. Into heavy traffic Heath stalked Rutz for a few laps before getting around and into the lead coming. Rutz blew up on lap 23 bringing out the only stoppage of the race. From there it was a seemingly easy green-white-checkered finish for Heath with Steve Kilcup and Josh DeWitt finishing second and third.

Zach McCabe passed early and often before picking up the lead from Paul Burdick on lap 12 of the sportsman main. Burdick used a great start to lead the first 12 laps but traffic proved to be heavy and McCabe picked his spot to make the pass for the lead. A single yellow flag on lap 14 closed the gap but McCabe easily pulled away for his fourth win of the season.

In the USAC midget division Chase Goetz won the 20-lap feature. Gaylon Stewart had a lock on the lead before his car lost power on lap 13. Goetz took over and lead the final six laps for the win lengthening his point lead.

For the Outlaw Tuners Jon Gunderson led all 17 laps for the win. Behind him Rick Young and Freddie Vela picked their way through the field to finish second and third.
