It’s Mayhew Again At Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — David Mayhew won a pair of wild NASCAR CITGO Lubricants Late Model features at Kern County Raceway Park on Saturday night, outlasting Brian and Eric Richardson on the brand-new half-mile speedway in Bakersfield.

Mayhew’s twin $1000 wins came on “Coca Cola Armed Forces Night” before a crowd of over 2,500 fans.

Other winners on the night included Upland’s Donny St. Ours winning the duel of the St. Ours clan for the INEX Legends main and Tyler Bannister won his second straight INEX Bandolero race.

The first 35-lap feature was a knock out slugfest between Mayhew and Eric Richardson that saw the two run side-by-side for much of the race. The race saw five lead changes, including laps 11 and 19 when Mayhew led just a single lap from the inside groove. Richardson made the outside work to his advantage for many laps before Mayhew broke through with door banging on lap 21.

Richardson stayed in tow for the next 10 laps before a caution on lap 31. Mayhew was able to scoot away in the final four laps to take the hard-earned victory.

Brian Richardson rode comfortably to finish third with All American Speedway driver Kiel Spaulding fourth and Kevin Callahan fifth.

The second 35-lap feature was led to the green by Gary Elmore before Brian Richardson overhauled him to take the top spot in turn two. Mayhew and Eric Richardson again came to blows, rubbing doors for second place many times while Brian Richardson held down a five-car-length advantage.

Mayhew used lapped traffic and a caution period to muscle past Eric Richardson for second and set his sights on Brian Richardson. After a lengthy caution on lap 31, the race was on between the top three cars. Mayhew took several looks inside Brian Richardson, and finally got the big run into turn three on the final lap.

Brian Richardson drifted wide and smacked the turn four while Mayhew dirt tracked across the stripe with Eric Richardson in tow. Brian Richardson slid across the line third with Donny St. Ours and Kiel Spaulding the top-five finishers.

Jonathan St. Ours took fast time in the INEX Legends but the feature was led flag-to-flag by his brother Donny for the feature win. The 35-lap contest was marked by great racing between Buddy Shepherd and Jonathan St. Ours, with Jonathan winning the battle for second place. A last lap move by Jonathan St. Ours saw him fall short of his brother Donny by a scant .081 seconds at the checkered flag,.

Tyler Bannister won the INEX Bandolero event for the second straight week, leading 27 of the 30 laps. The action mid-pack was between Trenton Sparks, Ryan Vargas, and Ricky Lewis, with the trio going three wide on several occasions. The battle for second between them boiled over down the backstretch midrace when Lewis was turned into the wall head-on.

The young driver was uninjured and Bannister cruised to a 1.715 second win ahead of Sparks, Vargas, Karson Sylvester and Tony Lamas.
