Sobbing Scores First In A Modified
YUMA, Ariz. – The first night of the Winter Nationals Weekend at Cocopah Speedway saw Jesse Sobbing in victory lane for the first time in his brief IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified career.
Sobbing, the two-time Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod national champion, drew the pole start and was scored first every time around the track in topping Thursday’s $750 to win main event.
“It was pretty awesome,” he said. “I’d raced four nights at Canyon Speedway Park and did pretty decent. Winning my fifth Modified start was just pretty awesome.”
William Gould caught Sobbing for the lead near midway in the 25-lapper but couldn’t hold onto the front spot. He ended the night in second, with Lance Mari, Dylan Smith and Aaron Spangler rounding out the top five.
The Northern SportMod career wins leader with 106 checkers, Sobbing notched his first IMCA Modified win in a new Jet Mod powered by a crate motor.
“There’s a heck of a learning curve in this class, especially in setup,” he said. “I hope we can get better. I think we’re on the right track.”
