Two LM Winners At Kern Co.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — For the second consecutive week, the NASCAR CITGO Lubricants Late Model action was marked by Eric Richardson and David Mayhew, with the two splitting the Twin 35 features on Whelen Engineering Night at Kern County Raceway Park.

The NASCAR Spec-Modifieds and the NASCAR Mini Stocks made their debuts as well with wins going to Eric Dalton and Johnny Wood.

Four lead changes highlighted the first 35-lap feature. Brian Richardson led the first five laps of competition from the pole driving Toby Daves’ No. 22 ride. The first caution of the race came out when Dylan Lupton hit the inside backstretch wall head-on on lap six.

Mayhew overhauled Brian Richardson for the top spot on the restart and brought Eric Richardson with him. Eric hounded Mayhew through traffic with the caution coming out on lap 29 for La Canada’s Greg Szot spinning in turns three and four.

Richardson used that to his advantage to take the lead when Mayhew spun the tires after picking the outside groove. The yellow immediately came back out on lap 30 for Jason Small spinning in turn four, and Mayhew charged past Richardson on that restart to take the lead.

Mayhew stormed to a narrow .108-second victory over Eric Richardson, Brian Richardson, Gary Elmore and Small.

The second main was a toe-to-toe duel between Richardson and Mayhew yet again. Johnny White made his Late Model debut and led the field to green but was passed on the outside by Small on lap two.

Small led until lap five with Eric Richardson and Mayhew in tow. Richardson worked his way past Small on lap six and Mayhew took over second on lap eight. The next 27 laps went caution-free with Mayhew continuing to look inside Richardson multiple times.

Richardson fended off Mayhew and sailed to a three car length victory in an exciting finish to get Richardson his first win of the 2013 season.

Small finished third, Elmore fourth and Brian Richardson rounded out the top five.

The NASCAR Spec-Modified debut on the half-mile attracted eight entries and was led to green by Eric Brust. Chris Dalton, who won both the heat race and the trophy dash, charged from fourth into the lead in the first two laps and had command of the field for much of the event.

Fast-time qualifier Bailey Thompson had a back-and-forth duel with Bakersfield Speedway dirt standout John Piker for second and then went after Dalton. A spin on lap 20 for Mark Allan in turn three brought the field together again, but Dalton was able to drive away.

Dalton cruised to victory for $1,000 with Thompson getting around Piker again for second and Eric Brust rounding out the finishing cars.

Ten NASCAR Mini Stocks turned out on the quarter-mile for $500 to win and created a race with a whopping seven lead changes across four different drivers. The wild back-and-forth racing saw many drivers using cross over maneuvers to maintain their positions.

A four-wide skirmish in the closing laps allowed the No. 35 of Johnny Wood to retake the lead from Jeff Berger and take the win. Racin Vernon finished third with Billy Lay and Dylan Baker the top five.
