Wild Finish At Madera Speedway

MADERA, Calif. – Five-dollar tickets and a Mother’s Day prize package valued at $500 brought extra fans to LoanMart Madera Speedway Saturday night, and all in attendance were treated to a night full of wild racing that at one point had a driver playing villain to jeers and taunts from the crowd.

Donnie Large Jr., in the popular local Toyota Sedans class, purposely caused race leader Kyle Fortney to spin out as the two entered turn four of the final lap in the 30-lap main event. With the checkered flag out and Fortney’s for the taking, Large Jr. – who had battled from second nearly all race to try and take the lead – accelerated and slammed into Fortney’s rear.

Candee McIntosh, in third at the time, was caught in the resulting spill and spun out as well.

As the results were being determined by officials, Large Jr. drove into the winner’s circle, got out to stand on his car, and took a sarcastic bow as calls of “cheater” came from the booing crowd, though many fans also cheered for the display.

Fortney, who was eventually dropped to fifth place – Large Jr. earned sixth while Tim Curtis took first, Candee McIntosh second, and her husband Del McIntosh third – later said that the move wasn’t out of the ordinary for Large Jr.

“I think the track’s too small for his ego,” Fortney said of Large Jr. “That’s all I can say about it … He got beat this race and he just couldn’t handle it.”

Curtis said he was happy with the win but wished it could have come in a cleaner race.

“I didn’t even know I got first place until just now,” Curtis said. “What a crazy race.”
