THE CHAMP
Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty teamed up for seven victories, 10 top-five finishes and 12 top 10s on their way to the Grand Am title, which wasn’t decided until the final race of the season.
With Gurney driving the final leg of the Sunchaser 1000 along with Fogarty and Jimmy Vasser, the Gainsco Pontiac-Riley was tracked down by Ganassi Telmex Lexus driver Scott Pruett, who began the day five points behind the consistent Fogarty/Gurney duo.
Early contact between Fogarty and Pruett had damaged both cars, but the two cars — now with Gurney behind the wheel — continued to battle for the point. In the final stages, Pruett bumped and passed Gurney before getting around leader Shane Lewis. With that, Pruett would have won the title by two points, but race officials gave Pruett a stop-and-go penalty for the bump on Gurney, which they said was avoidable, and the Gurney-Fogarty tandem went on to win the title by two points.
ON THE RECORD
“Any championship worth winning is difficult to accomplish. This one was the most difficult to win in my professional career, that’s for sure.”— Jon Fogarty
