THE CHAMP

Donny Schatz was the big winner on the World of Outlaws tour for the second-consecutive year.
Winning his second-straight title, Schatz won 19 WoO features and nearly $500,000 while driving his father Danny’s familiar No. 15.
Schatz also won the Knoxville Nationals for the second-straight year and added victories in the King’s Royal, Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup, Williams Grove Summer Nationals and Williams Grove National Open.
The 30-year-old North Dakota native will go to work for NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, driving a second car out of the TSR stable.
Schatz posted 53 top-five and 71 top-10 finishes in 78 events.

MOMENTOUS OCCASIONS

AUSSIE POWER: Kerry Madsen became the second Australian to win a World of Outlaws feature when he won the second race of the season Feb. 10 at Volusia Speedway Park. Madsen, despite years of experience, was eligible for and went on to win the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award.
LEAVING THE HELM: Longtime World of Outlaws team owner Dave Helm died Feb. 17, less than a week after Kerry Madsen drove his car to victory at Volusia Speedway Park. The familiar Selma Shell No. 11h team remained on tour the rest of the season.
WORLD TRAVELER: Steve Kinser closed the season with his 543rd career WoO triumph in the season finale at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
FLIP-FLOP: Crew chief Ricky Warner left Donny Schatz’s championship team after the 2006 season and worked with Joey Saldana through the first third of the season, but by mid-season he was back working with Schatz.
KENTUCKY COOL: Danny Lasoski romped from 15th starting spot to win the April 6 event in Paducah, Ky.
BOSSOM BUDDIES: Jac Haudenschild won the Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park in July. The event is named for Haudenschild’s childhood friend, Brad Doty, and was an emotional moment for both men.

ON THE RECORD

“I have been waiting a long time to win a race here at Eldora. I finished second here a number of times.” — Paul McMahan after winning at Eldora Speedway in June

“Unbelievable. This is the King’s Royal. We’ve come close in this race a few times, but to finally win it is just unbelievable.” — Donny Schatz

“My grandma was looking down on me all night. I want to dedicate it to her. It’s an unbelievable feeling.” — Tim Kaeding after winning at Tulare  in February following his grandmother’s death

“I hate to admit the fact that I am fairly happy to run second, because that is never our goal when we roll into any race track.” — Daryn Pittman

“It seems like it’s been a big desert in between the wins, but that is a compliment to how strong the competition is.” — Jason Meyers after winning at Dodge City, Kan., on June 22
