Rocketsports Signs Former F-1 Driver Bernoldi
Champ Car Notes
BELLE UNION, Ind. — The 2008 Champ Car World Series field gained another confirmed entry and two other teams announced their driver lineups for the upcoming open test at Sebring Int’l Raceway set for February 2-4.
Rocketsports Racing revealed that 29-year-old Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi will contest the full Champ Car campaign in the No. 8 Panoz-Cosworth. Bernoldi ran 28 Formula One races with a best finish of eighth place for Arrows in 2001-02, and he most recently competed in Brazilian Stock Cars, finishing 13th in the 2007 championship.
“Considering that I have a lot to learn, it will be a good challenge for me this year,” Bernoldi stated. “Not only do I have to learn a new race car, but also how the racing works in the United States. My experience in Europe and Formula One will definitely help me, but the rules are different over here.
“I am very excited about my opportunity this year in Champ Car with Rocketsports Racing,” he added. “Racing in the United States is something that I have always wanted to do and I think that Champ Car is the best series for me to have the opportunity to do so.”
• PKV Racing will field eight-year Champ Car veteran Alex Tagliani in its second car for the Sebring test. The team already announced Oriol Servia as its first driver for the 2008 season.
Tagliani was in talks with PKV over the winter and is eager to show the team he is the right man for their second entry.
“It’s a first class organization,” Tagliani remarked. “This is a team that is capable of winning the championship this year and it would be a dream come true for me to be with PKV in 2008. We will see where things go after the test.”
• Pacific Coast Motorsports said its cars will be driven at Sebring by Alex Figge and Mexican David Martinez. Figge’s appointment is no surprise, given that he is team owner Tom Figge’s son. But most observers believed Mario Dominguez was the front runner for the second PCM seat.
