Johnson Tops Jimmy Thomas Memorial Field
East Alabama Motor Speedway, Phoenix City, Ala.
PHOENIX CITY, Ala.— Ronnie Johnson took home the trophy and the $10,000 payout from the East Alabama Motor Speedway in the 23rd Annual Jimmy Thomas Memorial.
Johnson took the lead from Royce Bray on lap 15 and set a blistering pace, lapping all but five cars by lap 70.
Derrick Rainey was running second to Johnson and was in the wrong place at the wrong time as a lapped car chose the low lane, dropping right in front of Rainey. He was knocked out of the race after the wreck, handing William Thomas, the event’s namesake Jimmy Thomas’s grandson, the second position. Johnson remained unchallenged after the restart for Rainey’s crash, giving him his second win of the weekend. He also claimed the late-model sportsman win on the three-eighths mile track.
