Friday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Making just his 10th start with the USMTS Southern Series, Houston’s David Horner earned his first victory in the 40-lap main Friday during the second night of the South Texas Fall Nationals at South Texas Speedway.
After a flurry of early cautions — six over the first seven laps — Horner and pole-sitter Steve Holzkamper put distance between themselves and the rest of the field as USMTS Southern series point leader Kelly Shryock charged from his 23rd-starting position to third place.
A caution flag on lap 26 closed the gap and gave Shryock the break he needed to make a run at the leaders. Holzkamper took a peek to the inside of Horner while Shryock returned to the high line he used in his march  through the field. The trio battled over the final 10 laps as Holzkamper searched for a way around Horner and Shryock kept the pressure on Holzkamper.
As the white flag waved, Horner carried a two-car-length advantage to the first turn, but Holzkamper closed quickly and looked to the high side in the final turn. As Shryock looked on from the third spot, Horner and Holzkamper exited the final turn side by side with Horner edging Holzkamper by a bumper at the finish line to score his first career USMTS victory and his first top-10 finish.
Shryock, who had to use a provisional to get into the main event, passed 20 cars and held off 18th-starting Zack VanderBeek for third while Steve Miller was fifth.
The finish:
David Horner, Steve Holzkamper, Kelly Shryock, Zack VanderBeek, Steve Miller, Greg Skaggs, Scott Green, David Grigg, Rodney Sanders, Randy Tims, Chris Brown, Steve Pugh, Dena Wilson, Steve Majek, Steve Whiteaker, Jr., Eddy Ross, Tommy Weder, Jr., Lawrence Mikulencak, John Armstrong, Alan Mondus, Dale Flanagan, Paul White, Nicholas Littlejohn, Jason Hughes.
