Shryock Clinches Southern Series Crown
Thursday
BAYTOWN, Texas — Paul White scored his career-first USMTS victory Thursday, capturing the main event on opening night of the inaugural USMTS Southern Series Texas Winter Nationals at the Houston Raceway Park.
White was impressive from the outset, winning the sixth and final heat race by coming from sixth to first in the eight-lapper to earn a spot in the redraw for the 25-lap feature race. After starting third in the feature, White needed just six laps to overtake pole-sitter Chris Henigan.
The former USAC Silver Crown Series titlist pocketed $1,000 for his efforts in his No. 2w KraftKar Modified.
This was the 20th event this season for the USMTS Southern eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champ and current USMTS
Southern Series point-leader Kelly Shryock charged from 10th on the starting grid to finish second behind White, padding his point lead with two races remaining in the Texas Winter Nationals. Friday
BAYTOWN, Texas — Alan Mondus made his long tow from Lakeville, Minn., pay off as he led every lap to capture his career-first USMTS main event win and the $2,000 that went along with it in Friday night’s 35-lap Texas Winter Nationals feature at Houston Raceway Park.
The 19-year-old beat pole-sitter Jamie Burford through the first turn at the drop of the green flag, then cruised to victory from there.
Meanwhile, former eight-time national champion Kelly Shryock avoided a final-turn accident to finish fifth and clinch the USMTS Southern Series title.
Burford held firmly to the second spot behind Mondus until tagging the tire barrier at the bottom of the track on the final turn, skidding to a stop along with third-running Jason Hughes. The pair finished 18th and 19th, respectively. Shane Hebert took advantage to finish second, but was disqualified for being too light, handing the runner-up spot to Willy Kraft. Howard Willis was third and Chris Henigan took fourth ahead of Shryock.
