USMTS ’07: Tale Of Two Jasons

Aug. 14

FARLEY, Iowa — The United States Modified Touring Series invaded Farley Speedway Aug. 14 for the fifth race in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship, with three drivers making big strides in the ever-tightening point battle.
Dean Mahlstedt took the lead from the start and checked out on the field. Jason Krohn made several late challenges but settled for second. Jon Tesch raced from 14th to third, with Willy Kraft and Jason Hughes rounding out the top five.
Hughes leads the standings, but Kelly Shryock and Krohn are close behind.

WEST UNION, Iowa — It was a great and horrible night for Skyrocket on Aug. 15 as the USMTS made its first visit to the Echo Valley Speedway.
While Jason Krohn wheeled his Skyrocket chassis into victory lane, his car builder, Kelly Shryock, suffered mechanical problems in the main event and took a huge hit in his bid for an unprecedented ninth-straight USMTS National Championship.
Krohn led the majority of the event on the four-tenths-mile oval en route to his fifth victory of the season. Willy Kraft finished second, ahead of Jon Tesch, Mark Schulte and Ken Schrader.
Krohn moved to second in the standings, while Shryock fell to fourth after finishing 24th.

Thursday

OWATONNA, Minn. — Jason Hughes continued his three-week onslaught, as he powered his way to victory in the USMTS event Thursday at Steele County Speedway.
The top four in points coming into the event rose to the occasion, garnering the top-four finishing positions in the main event. But it was Hughes, the point leader coming in, who left the track with the best score after passing his three closest rivals.
Hughes started 10th and took the lead from Jon Tesch on lap 24. He held off Tesch for the victory, with Jason Krohn, Kelly Shryock and Tommy Myer following.
Hughes took a 34-point lead over Krohn in the standings.

CRESCO, Iowa — Everybody is chasing Jason Krohn in this year’s Hunt for the USMTS National Championship.
The USMTS invaded Cresco Speedway on Friday, and Krohn claimed his season’s sixth victory, closing the gap on point-leader Jason Hughes, who finished third.
Tim Donlinger took second, with Tommy Weder, Jr. and Kelly Shryock fourth and fifth, respectively.
Hughes holds a slim 20-point lead over Krohn.
