358 Special: Danny O’Brien Scores Sweep
Friday
LAFARGEVILLE, N.Y. — Danny O’Brien collected his second Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series race win in just three tries on Friday night at Can-Am Motorsports Park, holding back Danny Johnson and older brother Pat O’Brien before rain shortened the race from 75 to 52 laps.
The 2007 Brockville Ontario Speedway point-champion started third on the 25-car grid and watched as early leaders Frankie Caprara and Gary Tomkins traded the top spot. O’Brien swapped the point with Tomkins on three occasions before muscling underneath in turn two for the final exchange on lap 29 just as a mist of rain began to fill the air.
A final yellow flag was thrown on lap-50 for wet track conditions, and the red flag unfurled just two laps later as an unexpected downpour inundated the LaFargeville layout within minutes. The event was called official soon after, giving O’Brien his first series victory at Can-Am and eighth of his career on tour.
Fast-time trailer Johnson was forced to settle for second-place ahead of Pat O’Brien while Big-Block Modified stars Gary Tomkins and Vic Coffey, the 2007 Can Am champ, filled out the front-five. Tomkins also earned the guaranteed starting berth in the 358-Modified Championship scheduled for Oct. 6 during Super DIRT Week XXXVI in Syracuse.
