Decker Conquers New Egypt Before DIRTcar’s Weekend Of Twins

Super DIRTcar

By Tom Skibinski

Aug. 15

NEW EGYPT, N.J. — Empire State invader Billy Decker swapped the lead with home-track hero Keith Hoffman on three occasions, and Decker’s final pass with 10 laps to go was enough to carry him to his second Super DIRTcar Series victory of the season Aug. 15 in the Big Bear 60 at New Egypt Speedway.
“I certainly wasn’t playing around,” Decker, 42, said of his back-and-forth battle with Hoffman. “He fired really good on the restarts and after a few laps I got some heat in the tires. We might have had the edge then, it was just fun racing.”
Hoffman settled for second but earned himself preferred starter status in the Rite Aid 200 Championship on Oct. 7 during Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Brett Hearn finished third to extend his point lead, while Dale Planck crossed the line fourth ahead of Tim Fuller in round 16 of the 2007 tour.

Making his fourth season appearance at Can-Am, which is located just 10 minutes from his home, Fuller charged from fifth place on the 30-car starting grid to overtake Danny Johnson on lap five and cruise to his second victory of the season. Fuller opened up an eight-car margin at the stripe.
Gary Tomkins rallied to secure second ahead of fast-closing Pat Ward, Billy Decker and Pat O’Brien.

Sunday

WEEDSPORT, N.Y.  — Former Weedsport track champions Danny Johnson and Tim Fuller bested a stellar field en route to a pair of $3,000 victories Sunday, splitting the DIRT Hall of Fame Classic Big-Block Modified Twin 53s at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
Johnson took advantage of the first yellow flag on lap 37 to erase the 2.5-second advantage of then-leader Jimmy Phelps, then swept around Phelps three laps later and held off a late bid by point-leader Brett Hearn to score his fourth tour victory of the season. Phelps maintained third despite a lap-52 caution period bunching the field, with Steve Paine and Fuller filling out the front five.
Johnson drew to invert the top-eight finishers from the first 53-lapper, and when the green flag waved to begin the second twin, front-row starter Billy Dunn out-gunned polesitter Justin Haers to set the early pace. Fourth-place starter Fuller needed 23 laps to track down Dunn before scoring his second series victory in two nights to pull ahead of Brett Hearn by 10 markers in the point standings through 20 races. Billy Decker settled for third in front of Phelps and Haers.
