Phillips, Frye, Korte Are Triumphant In Late Model Shootout

PONTOON BEACH, Ill. — Terry Phillips continued his red-hot month of August, winning the Aug. 22 MARS DIRTcar Series/UMP DIRTcar Racing Late Model Shootout at Tri-City Speedway.
The $5,000 triumph was Phillips’s second consecutive on the MARS tour after he went winless in the first 11 events of the season.
Phillips, 41, was the evening’s dominant force. He blasted into the lead from the outside pole and never looked back, leading all 40 laps of the three-eighths-mile oval.
Will Vaught made a late charge to finish second, while four-time series champion Billy Frye romped from 14th to finish third. Shannon Babb and Randy Korte rounded out the top five.

PADUCAH, Ky. — Bill Frye’s “Drive for Five” is alive.
The veteran continued putting a slow start in this year’s MARS DIRTcar Series in his rearview window, capturing Friday night’s USA World 50 at Paducah Int’l Raceway.
Frye’s $5,000 victory in the MARS/UMP DIRTcar Racing Late Model Shootout gave him three wins in the last four MARS events. He also regained the points lead in his quest for a second straight and record fifth overall MARS championship, overtaking his 20-year-old protégé Will Vaught, who finished eighth.
After going winless through the first eight races of the 2007 MARS schedule, Frye broke out with back-to-back victories on Aug. 4-5 at Springfield (Mo.) Raceway and Monett (Mo.) Speedway. He finished third on Aug. 22 at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill., before returning to the spotlight at the three-eighth-mile Paducah oval.
Shannon Babb led the first 27 laps of the race before being overtaken by Frye. Babb held on for second and was followed to the finish by Terry Phillips, Randy Korte and John Tindal.

PEVELY, Mo. — Defending UMP DIRTcar Racing Late Model national champion Randy Korte was flawless Saturday night at I-55 Raceway, capturing the 40-lap MARS DIRTcar Series/UMP DIRTcar Racing Late Model Shootout.
Korte, 42, became the first UMP driver to visit victory lane in the week’s trio of MARS/UMP Shootout events. Former MARS champions Terry Phillips and Bill Frye grabbed the glory for their tour with victories in the other races.
Coming off a triumph in I-55 Raceway’s regular UMP late model show one week earlier, Korte blasted into the lead at the start of Saturday’s extra-distance affair and never looked back. He paced the entire distance to pocket the $5,000 top prize.
Korte was able to distance himself in the race’s late stages from Will Vaught, who settled for a second-place finish ahead of Billy Faust, Brian Shirley and Bill Frye.
