RAPID CITY, S.D. — Donny Schatz used plenty of patience and perseverance to earn his eighth World of Outlaws victory of the season June 25 at Black Hills Speedway.
The reigning series champion endured a couple of delays in the program needed to rework the track first because it was dry and secondly to remove rocks from the three-eighths-mile oval.
“It was a trying night,” said Schatz, who won for the first time in a month. “We had all kinds of issues. We had guys hit with rocks and then reworking the track. All in all, they worked their tails off to get it right.”
Schatz lined up fourth and gained two spots on the opening lap, as he got around Tim Shaffer and Jason Meyers. From there, he patiently shadowed Kerry Madsen the rest of the way.
The opening that he needed came as the pair exited the second turn on the 35th and final lap. Schatz ducked to the bottom and made the pass stick en route to the $10,000 top prize.
Schatz, who posted his 33rd top-10 finish in 36 events, extended his point lead over Joey Saldana, who finished 10th. Madsen led the first 34 laps and finished second.
