CONCORD, N.C. — According to an announcement on Volunteer Speedway's Web site, the World of Outlaws events scheduled for March 14-15 have been canceled. The announcement reads that the cancellation is due to "extenuating circumstances."
The cancellation comes after the track's annual late-model "Spring Thaw 100" was postponed this past weekend due to inclement weather in the track's home of Bulls Gap, Tenn.
A release on the World of Outlaws Web site blamed wintry weather for the cancellation.
"Given the wintry conditions that have persisted into March,
Volunteer Speedway officials have not been able to prepare their
facility for an event featuring 410-sprint cars competing at high
speeds," the release read.
Barring a last-minute schedule change by the WoO, the series will not be back on track until a trip to I-55 Speedway in Pevely, Mo., on April 5. With the latest cancellation, the WoO Sprint Car Series has been on track only once since the DIRTcar Nationals in early February. Races at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., and Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare, Calif., were rained out.
Volunteer Speedway owner Joe Loven said his track will host races March 14-15, headlined by a $10,000-to-win, $700-to-start super late-model event called the "Running of the Bulls," a 100-lap event over the four-tenths oval. The Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series "10th Annual Spring Thaw 100" has been rescheduled for March 21-22, making it possible for a super late-model competitor to win as much as $30,000 over consecutive weekends at Volunteer Speedway.
