SEATTLE — IHRA Nitro Funny Car driver Dale Creasy, Jr. was listed in stable condition at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Sunday night with leg injuries sustained in a semi-final-round accident during the CARS RV & Marine & Sports Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceway.
Creasy, the two-time defending class champion, was taken to the hospital by helicopter at about 8:30 p.m., Sunday
The transmission in his 2008 Chevy Impala exploded near the finish line in his loss to Grant Downing. His car stopped short of the turnoff, and emergency workers on the scene reported that Creasy had shrapnel in his legs.
A Capital Health official from the hospital’s Public Affairs Department, who declined to be identified, confirmed Creasy’s condition and said she was not permitted to release any other information.
Bob Stinnett, an IHRA tech- crew member, said Creasy was removed from the car and placed in an ambulance at the race track, then taken to the helicopter. He said as paramedics were wheeling him from the ambulance to the helicopter, Creasy looked up and asked, “Did I win?” Creasy’s mother was standing nearby and laughed.
Creasy’s crew members indicated they thought the driver would face surgery and some rehabilitation. It is unclear what the extent of his injuries are and whether he will be able to race again this season.
