Funny Car Ace Suffers Fatal Heart Attack
Al Hofmann, who won 15 times in 32 NHRA final-round appearances, is dead at 60.
EUSTIS, Fla. — Veteran NHRA Funny Car driver Al Hofmann, who had not competed since 2002, died of a heart attack March 20 at his Florida home. He was 60 years old.
Hofmann won 15 NHRA national events in just 32 final-round appearances. Hofmann was a regular in the NHRA Drag Racing Series from 1991 through 1996 and raced on a more limited schedule through 2002 when he competed in three events.
Hofmann’s best season was in 1995 when he won five times and finished second in the standings behind perennial Funny Car titlist John Force.
Hofmann was badly injured in a 1997 crash at the Gatornationals, but he returned later that season to win at Dallas.
Hofmann also won the Winston Invitational twice and the Budweiser Shootout on three occasions.
