Franchitti Tabbed 2nd Quarter DoY
Beats Out NASCAR's Jeff Gordon
SARASOTA, Fla. — On the track and in the voting, Dario Franchitti easily outdistanced his rivals to win the second quarter Driver of the Year – 2007.
The Scotland native led the IndyCar standings as of the date of the ballot, and in the second quarter has won two events — including the Indianapolis 500 — posted two second-place finishes and finished no worse than fourth.
“I’m very honored to have received the Driver of the Year ward this quarter,” Franchitti said after learning of the award. “I am particularly honored when you see the competition.”
NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, a four-time Driver of the Year titlist and winner of the 2007 first-quarter ballot, was second, followed by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards.
In the voting, Franchitti took 11 first-place votes to finish with 131 points. Gordon took five first-place votes for 105 points, while Edwards received 40 points.
Fourth place went to World of Outlaws driver Donnie Schatz. NASCAR driver Martin Truex, Jr. finished eighth and was the only other driver to receive a first-place vote. A total of 20 drivers scored points in the second-quarter voting.
