WATERFORD, Conn. — Randy Cabral won the 25-lap Northeastern Midget Ass’n feature Sunday at Waterford Speedbowl’s Budweiser Modified Nationals.
It was the fifth-career and second-straight Speedbowl victory for Cabral, who dedicated the triumph to the late Shane Hammond.
Hammond, a NEMA competitor, was killed in an accident a week ago at Thompson Int’l Speedway. After losing his close friend, Cabral said he initially decided not to race, but changed his mind.
“(Shane) wasn’t gonna be happy (if) I didn’t go racing,” Cabral said. “I decided I was going to race for Shane. I had to make it count. To come out with a win is unbelievable.” 
Clearly in command, Cabral turned a sensational 12.848 second lap on the third mile just before the final caution with two laps remaining. 
He beat back a final challenge from runner-up Joey Payne, Jr. Greg Stoehr, Adam Cantor and Erica Santos completed the top five.
Jesse Slate won the 10-lap NEMA Lites exhibition race.
