PHOENIX — 2006 USAC National Midget Champion Jerry Coons, Jr. beat out teammates Sammy Swindell and Josh Wise to win Saturday night’s Midget Western Finale at Manzanita Speedway.
Danny Stratton led the first 17 laps before Coons slipped by on the outside just as the caution flag waved. On the restart, both Stratton and Nathan High – the 2007 AMRA Champion – dropped out with engine problems.
Coons led the last eight laps, holding off Swindell on the final green-white-checkered shootout to secure the victory. Josh Wise came home third to complete the sweep for car owner Cruz Pedregon. Brad Kuhn and Justin Grant rounded out the top five.
