Kobyluck’s Chevy Slips To Victory

Busch East

By Dan Jack

LAKEVILLE, Conn. — Matt Kobyluck took his Mohegan Sun Chevrolet to victory lane for the second time in three years Saturday at the 1.53-mile Lime Rock Park road circuit, the only road race on the Busch East schedule.
Handling the twists and turns of Lime Rock in the Mohegan Sun 200 proved difficult for many of the drivers, their off-course excursions causing the large number of cautions. Cars dumping fluids caused two red-flag periods for track clean up, and 40 of 82 laps were run under yellow.
Kobyluck started from the pole and headed the field for the first 18 laps, before Ruben Pardo — last year’s winner — took the point for six laps. As the cautions and fuel-only pit stops cycled through, the front-runners were Kobyluck, 2006 series champion Mike Olsen, Sean Caisse, Jerry Marquis, Mike Johnson, Brian Chew and Pardo.
One by one, the front pack dwindled. First, Chew had contact and dropped back. Then, on one of the restarts, Marquis (making his first start at Lime Rock in a half a dozen years) got punted going into the first turn. When the green waved for the final time on lap 74, it looked like it would be decided from the top five: leader Olsen, Kobyluck, Caisse, Johnson, and a hard-charging Pardo.
Kobyluck got by on lap 78 and pulled out a little lead. It appeared he would cruise to victory, but on the last lap, a backmarker oiled the track at the top of the hill before the final turn.  All of a sudden, cars were spinning everywhere.
Kobyluck got off in the grass, accidentally hit his kill switch,  and was able to get going again. Olsen sailed into the tire barrier. Johnson was off and done. Caisse was able to keep going and very nearly snuck by Kobyluck at the line, finishing a fine second.
“I felt real confident until we came over the hill,” Kobyluck said. “I saw the yellow but didn’t know it was for oil. I hit the oil and went off and said to myself, ‘Well, I’ve done this before,’ but I was so far off I didn’t know if I could save it.”
When the checkered flag waved, it was Kobyluck, Caisse, Anton, Jesus Hernandez and Jeffrey Earnhardt.
The finish:
