Haas CNC Penalties Upheld

The National Stock Car Commission upheld NASCAR's penalties after hearing appeals from the teams on Monday.

Haas CNC Penalties Upheld

Penalties against the No. 66 and No. 70 of CNC Haas were upheld.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The National Stock Car Racing Commission rejected the appeals of Haas CNC Racing after hearing separate appeals from the No. 66 and the No. 70 teams on Monday.

Both teams had been fined and docked both championship and owner's points after the teams were deemed to have illegally adjusted the rear wings on the cars prior to the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Both teams lost 150 championship points, 150 owner points and both crew chiefs were fined $100,000 each, suspended for six weeks and placed on probation through the end of the year. Both cars were also impounded by NASCAR.

Neither team appealed on the basis of innocence but rather argued that NASCAR penalties were too severe. The 150 owner and championship points were new highs for points penalties levied by the sanctioning body. The teams also argued that the infractions did not involve illegal parts on the car, and that the resulting higher wing location was a disadvantage.

In both cases, the commissioners voted unanimously to uphold NASCAR's penalties without reduction, saying "that the infractions resulted from what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to circumvent the inspection process. Accordingly, the penalties that were issued are warranted."

The appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Commissioner, but have not indicated that they will do so.
