DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The field is set for the 50th running of the Daytona 500 Sunday at Daytona Int'l Speedway.
Two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will lead the field to the green flag with two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip on the outside pole.
As winners of Thursday's Gatorade Dual 150s, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Denny Hamlin will make up the second row.
With victories in last Saturday's Budweiser Shootout and on Thursday's Gatorade 150, Earnhardt has established himself as a favorite for the 500 in his first campaign in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 Chevrolet.
"I feel like we got a great shot, you know what I mean?," Earnhardt said. "Nobody's boastful enough, I don't think, personality-wise to come in here and claim that (they're the favorite). I wouldn't expect anybody to do that. But I thought we got a great shot. We've won some races down here, so we got to be in the group if there's a group of them."
Among the top 10 starters are some of the usual suspects, including Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne. But Reed Sorenson will start his No. 41 Chip Ganassi Dodge beside Stewart on the inside of Row 3 after a second-place finish to Earnhardt on Thursday.
But Thursday's Duals were full of surprises, including the qualifying runs of Kenny Wallace in the No. 87 Chevrolet of Furniture Row racing, who captured a transfer spot out of the first Dual and gave fledgling Furniture Row a second car in the field along with the No. 78 of Joe Nemechek, who had qualified on time.
"Besides my wife and my children, this moment right now is the greatest time in my life," said Wallace. "It beats any Nationwide championship, any three-time most popular driver. I got all them stats. This right here, this is the 50th annual Daytona 500, the biggest sporting event in the United States right now, and I raced my way into it. Besides my wife and children, this is the number one thing. It's unbelievable."
John Andretti, driving the No. 34 Makoto Chevrolet, provided the biggest surprise of the second 150, passing David Reutimann on the final lap to earn his spot in the Daytona 500. Andretti transferred along with three-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett, who will retire after five races this season.
"I don't know what to say. I didn't expect to be here," Andretti said. "I think the team has done a great job. I mean, in the race, there were some guys that really did treat me fair. One of them is sitting to my right (David Reutimann.) Tony (Stewart) helped me at the beginning.
"The last lap for me was everything. I wasn't in the race till I came off turn four. I guess that's all that matters."
