The Chase Is On

How The Chase Works

Prior to 2007, the top-10 drivers in Nextel Cup points and any driver within 400 points of the series leader after race No. 26 was eligible for The Chase For The Nextel Cup. Those eligible then had their points readjusted in increments of five; first place began the 10-race Chase with 5,050 points, second with 5,045 and so on.
In January, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France announced changes to The Chase format.
• Only the top 12 drivers in Nextel Cup points following the season’s 26th event are eligible for The Chase.
• Through the first 26 races, drivers will earn 10 bonus points for each race victory. After the 26th race, the series standings will be adjusted, and drivers will be seeded based on the number of triumphs they’ve earned.  All drivers will begin with 5,000 points before bonus points are factored into the driver’s point total. For example, Jimmie Johnson, who was sixth in series points heading into the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, jumped to first place to begin The Chase thanks to his series-leading five victories.
• All 43 competitors race each week, and those outside of The Chase continue to earn points based on NASCAR’s standard point system.
• The driver who has earned the most points through the 10-race Chase will be crowned champion during Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
